Open Cabin is situated within a small clearing on a wooded lot in Columbia County, New York. The square shaped cabin is an exercise in restraint and rigor where the object reads as formal abstraction against the landscape. The strict geometry of the house is furthered with a system of large, glazed openings that allow the cabin to be more fully open to the landscape. The openings number and placement respond to unique conditions to the landscape that differ depending on the orientation.

The interior is organized around a T-shaped volume that houses all essential program elements and allows for an uninterrupted perimeter and interconnected spaces. Freestanding objects, including the kitchen island, primary bed and piano help to modulate and define the space while concealed sliding doors allow for two proper bedrooms when privacy is required. Modest in size and materiality, Open Cabin is clad in corrugated milled aluminum panels paired with spruce wood windows. Inside, douglas fir wood cladding is used to wrap the T-shaped volume on the interior.
